Town Factsheet

Wareham occupies a strategic site on both the Rivers Frome and Piddle, close to their confluence into Poole Harbour. Its grid like street pattern could be of Saxon origin and it still stands within the compass of its earth ramparts. Despite its relatively small size Wareham retains a good range of social, recreational and educational facilities

The Purbeck School

The Purbeck School is a mixed comprehensive for students aged from 13 to 19. We are located in spacious accommodation in Wareham overlooking the Purbeck Hills. We serve the wide area covered by our four contributory middle schools - Bovington, Sandford, Swanage and Wareham - with whom we work closely to ensure that our students make a smooth transition to life at Purbeck.

Wareham Workhouse and Poor Law Union

Separate Poor Law Unions for Wareham and for Purbeck were formed on 25th March 1836. Howver, within a few months, the two were merged into a single Wareham and Purbeck Union.

Wareham

King John was a nasty bit of stuff. Indeed one of his contemporaries said of him, ‘Foul as it is, Hell itself would be defiled by the presence of John’. Such sentiments could not be said to be uncommon in his kingdom. So when, in 1214, a local visionary fanatic by the name of Peter de Pomfret predicted that before the next Ascension Day John’s rule would be over Peter was banged up in Corfe Castle until the fateful day had safely come and gone.

CEH Furzebrook

Furzebrook was originally opened as one of the first two research stations of the Nature Conservancy in 1954. It is located near Wareham, in the Isle of Purbeck, in an area of exceptional biodiversity. Within this area examples of all the principal biotopes of southern England are to be found. Close to the Station are the salt marshes and estuarine communities of Poole Harbour, the Dorset heathlands, chalk downlands, limestone grasslands and coastal cliffs.

Wareham is one of a very ancient set of towns which King Alfred gave orders for defences to be raised against the Vikings. One church, St Martin's is still mainly Saxon. The town has not grown much bigger since that time.

The Old Granary

This recently converted granary offers two very comfortable twin-bedded rooms both with en-suite facilities, colour TV, clock-radio, kettle, tea and coffee tray and other thoughtful extras. A good breakfast, varied each day, is served in the dining room. As each room has its own outside access, one on to the terrace and one with the old granary steps leading to a door in the bedroom, visitors can return to their rooms at any time.
