TOLLARD-ROYAL, a parish partly in that part of the hundred of CRANBORNE which is in the Shaston (West) division of the county of DORSET, but chiefly in the hundred of CHALK, county of WILTS, 6¾ miles (S.E. by E.) from Shaftesbury, containing 288 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £16, and in the patronage of — Austin, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. In this parish is an old farmhouse, called King John's hunting seat, thought to be the remains of an ancient royal residence for hunting in Cranborne Chase. Volume 4, page 318 |
