Seeking info on my mother's family that immigrated in about 1848 from "Fifet, Somersetshire" which I presume is one of the Fifehead's now in Dorset. The parents' names were William Toogood and Elizabeth (Sanford) Toogood. Children: William S., Mary, Thomas, Barbara, Arthur, Vincent and Sidney, all born in England. Any ideas which of the Fifet's it might have been and where best to search for information on this area and family. Any guess on where they may have shipped out from and to where? (They settled in Wisconsin). Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Scadding/Scadden/Scaddan/Skadding

Researcher: Alan Scadding
Other Names:

All these surnames appear to be corruptions of one another. My ancestors were sometimes SCADDINGS, sometimes SCADDENS, and came from Chideock in the 18th Century. A related family arrived in Corfe in the 1780s but called themselves SCADDAN. I would like to find out whether there is a link and to trace my Chideock Scaddens back beyond the 1720s. John SKADDING was married to Katherine by the early 1720s because they had their first son, Moses in Symondsbury at about that time. Perhaps they lived in Symondsbury?

Researcher: Alan Scadding

The line in Dorset started when, in 1739, John SKADDING married Hannah Catherine Barns in Henyock, Devon and went to live at Symondsbury, Dorset, soon after. The next generation moved to Chideock and Bradpole and since then Scaddens have gradually spread through Dorset. a Scadding line was in London by the 1830s and a Scadeng line in Bermondsey from about the same period.
Any information would be of interest.

I am descended I believe from a Peter Kenway who we think is the son of William or Joseph. His son James (1742-1833) married an Ann Seymour and his grandson James (1770-1834) married a Deborah Balston in 1796. Their sons William and Henry married Rachel and Elizabeth Heath (who might be sisters).

In late June and early July of this year (1999) I will be in England to walk part of the Dorset Coast Path and visit various people, including, hopefully, any of my distant Sprague relatives in or around Upwey. I would like to hear from any Sprague relatives in Dorset or anywhere in the UK about this. David Diamond, 93 Henry Law Ave., Apt. 145, Dover, New Hampshire 03820, USA.

Am related to the Spragues who came to the American Continent and went to Canada when the Revolution began. They got kicked out and moved to Ohio (Washington County) where they were part of the Ohio Company of early settlers in the region. Zerviah Sprague married David Ross in MAssachusettes. Help?

I have just linked a pair of my Great Great Grandparents to Dorset. They were Tom and Emma STACEY [nee HILLIER]. Tom was born in Motcombe and Emma in Shaftesbury - c1858/59. Tom is listed as a coach fitter in the 1881 census....when they were living in Shaftesbury. Soon after they moved to Even Swindon where he worked in the GWR works. It would appear [from IGI] that both the Staceys and Hilliers were well established families in Dorset.

It appears that a William SMEDMORE (bapt. 1798)[ son of Joseph SMEDMORE (1754-1825)], a mariner, probably visited Port Royal, Jamaica around 1835-1836 and fathered my grandfather, William Dey SMEDMORE. I am presently searching available merchant navy records for William to validate this. The name SMEDMORE is unique in Jamaica and I am pretty sure this William (1798) must be my great-grandfather. Looking for information on the Stoodley's who came to Newfoundland. Information we have is that Thomas Stoodley and wife Mary settled in Lamaline approx 1805/10. I estimate his birth date in 1783. We think he had a brother Jonathon or similar spelling, that also came over and settled in Nfld. They came from the Dorset area and was involved with the Nfld fishery, probably with the Newman company out of Poole?.

Commander Leake did his investigation and report of the Nfld fishery in 1702 for the British government. One of the harbours he sailed into was Bay Bulls (near St. John's) The fishing admiral there for that season was Captain Studley. At that time it appears they only stayed for the summer and returned to England after the fishing season.

Is there anyone who can provide me more information about this.
Thanking you kindly

Strong

Researcher: Geoff Humble

I am researching the STRONG family, who migrated from Dorset in 1852 on board the 'Time and Truth'.

The ship left Plymouth 17 Sept, and arrived at Point Henry (near Geelong) in Victoria, Australia on 5 January 1853. It was not a pleasant journey; the ship was a small vessel, and had been completed shortly before this voyage. Infectious dieases such as dysentary broke out en route, as well as whooping cough and other chest ailments. This made life particularly uncomfortable in steerage. The ship was placed in quarantine briefly until cleared by the Colonial surgeon.

In steerage was the Strong family, GEORGE (the father) and his wife ANN (both aged 42), then HENRY (13), JAMES (10), WILLIAM (8), EMMA (5) and GEORGE (2). Listed seperately were two other daughters, SARAH (20) and MARY ANN (15), who had been engaged by employers prior to departure. The occupation shown on the passenger listing for George was 'harness maker' -- his trade on the death certificate was 'saddler'.

All the children were baptised at Blandford Forum; George was born/baptised at Troytown; Ann (nee Moore) was born/baptised at Hinton St Mary -- this is from the 1851 census. There was one other male child, Henry James, but he died in infancy prior to the census.

George and Ann were married at Blandford Forum parish church 20 Nov 1831. Witnesses were Henry and Mary Ann Strong. He died at the family home in O'Connell Street, Ashby (West Geelong, Victoria, Australia) from consumption 12 Nov 1860.

Sarah and Mary Ann both married in Geelong and migrated to NEW ZEALAND.

Henry also went to New Zealand, but there does not appear to be any record of his voyage (did he stow away? Shock, horror!). He spent some years moving around the islands, eventually marrying a young girl and settling down. He was rumoured to have been something of a 'black sheep'.

I think George had an older brother, HENRY, who was born/baptised at Stourpaine abt 1804, and married to MARY (Ann?).

Their father was (again, I think) JAMES STRONG, born abt 1773 at Ashton Gifford in Wiltshire; died abt 1851 at Stourpaine.

I would like to clarify the names, dates and places back from George, and exchange info with any other STRONG researchers.

Looking for information on THOMAS STRONG who was a merchant listed in the 1753 census for Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. He was evidently from Poole, Dorset. Thomas probably had a son JOHN STRONG who was living in Old Perlican, NF in 1756 and was listed in the 1800 census for Old Perlican. John had a son THOMAS STRONG who was born c.1765. Any information concerning the Strong family of Poole/Newfoundland would be most appreciated. Thanks! Jeff Martin- Windham, Maine

Website: The Holden/Adams Genealogy Page

Thomas Strong is listed in the 1753 Census for Trinity Bay, Newfoundland as Head of Household with wife, son, 2 daughters, 15 Irish servants, 2 boats, 1 skiff, and 3 winter servants It is believed that Thomas Strong came to Newfoundland from Poole, Dorset, England. It seems that Thomas Strong was a somewhat wealthy man, by the list of assets ascribed to him in the aforementioned census.A small group of us here in the States are hoping that somewhere in Poole or Dorset there is a record of Thomases departure from Poole and perhaps a record of his lineage. My homepage will show you where we are in our search and it has been a struggle getting this far. If you can help in our search, us "blokes" would sure be obliged. Swaffield

Researcher: Judy Ramsey
Other Names: Hallett,

I am researching this Netherbury family and trying to prove an illegitimate birth - any information would be welcome:

According to the early census records my great grandmother Elizabeth HALLETT, born 1859, was the youngest daughter of George Hallett and Anna HITCHCOCK (Hannah HISCOCKS).

George Hallett and Anna Hitchcock had various children, with Sarah being born about 1840. At the time Elizabeth was born (25 Sept 1859) Sarah was 19, and her mother Anna was 40. Although Anna was capable biologically of being the mother of Elizabeth, Elizabeth's daughter Florence (my grand mother) was told by her mother that she was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah Hallett and John SWAFFIELD from Bridport, a cousin of Florence's heard the story from her mother, and the 1891 census has Anna, widowed, with her grand daughter, Elizabeth.

If the female children of the family were told of an illegitimate birth it is very likely to be true - but how to prove it is another matter.

I haven't seen Elizabeth's birth certificate yet - if she was claimed as being Anna's daughter on the early census records, instead of the illiegimate child of Sarah, would this be on the birth certificate, or did they tell the truth on these (more official) documents.

Any help would be most welcome.
