It appears that a William SMEDMORE (bapt. 1798)[ son of Joseph SMEDMORE (1754-1825)], a mariner, probably visited Port Royal, Jamaica around 1835-1836 and fathered my grandfather, William Dey SMEDMORE. I am presently searching available merchant navy records for William to validate this. The name SMEDMORE is unique in Jamaica and I am pretty sure this William (1798) must be my great-grandfather. I have traced the SMEDMORE family back to John SMEDMORE (C1650-1686) in Swanage and am now researching the local history of the area. I would welcome email from anyone with a similar interest in Swanage and surrounding area.
