Balston

Researcher: Judith Taylor

We are interested in finding out more about the Kenway family of Bridport. James Kenway (married to Jane) was imprisoned at Exeter in 1660 for his religious beliefs. He had three children, William, Joseph and Mary. They were all members of the Society of Friends and were imprisoned or had their property confiscated.

I am descended I believe from a Peter Kenway who we think is the son of William or Joseph. His son James (1742-1833) married an Ann Seymour and his grandson James (1770-1834) married a Deborah Balston in 1796. Their sons William and Henry married Rachel and Elizabeth Heath (who might be sisters).

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who is researching this name or who has specific knowledge or can suggest sources for more information.

It appears that a William SMEDMORE (bapt. 1798)[ son of Joseph SMEDMORE (1754-1825)], a mariner, probably visited Port Royal, Jamaica around 1835-1836 and fathered my grandfather, William Dey SMEDMORE. I have details of their NZ lives, but would like to hear from anyone who may be able to help me with their earlier life in Dorset, and other possible family contacts of the Bishops. The Dorset Poll Book lists a John Bishop in Milborne, Dewlish, with a wife Ann, at about the right period. If anyone know more about these particular Bishops, I would love to hear from you. Lucy was born around 1811 in Sherborne, Dorset and died in Riccarton, Christchurch, New Zealand in 1889. JOhn Brake died in 1898 in Christchurch, New Zealand. John Brake was the son of a John Brake. I have no idea who Lucy Brakes first husband was. Four children were born to that marriage and set sail on the ship Clontarf to New Zealand. One child was scoulded to death as the ship arrived in Christchurch and the three surviving children married and raised families. John Brian Brake, one of New Zealand's most celebrated photographers is a grandchild of Robert Brake, the son of John and Lucy. Likewise Fredrick Martin Saul, Judge, Victoria, Australia is another grandchild. Do any relatives still live in Dorset? My physical address is 165 Wakanui Rd, Ashburton, New Zealand.
